The much anticipated Revier-Derby between BVB and Schalke 04 ended with a 1-1 draw with Mohamed Zidan providing late heroics as he scored the equalizer with nine minutes remaining.
While BVB was hopeful for a victory, there is a great deal to be pleased with overall play as they were clearly the better of the two sides in Gelsenkirchen. While Schalke controlled much of ball possession before the break, for the most part their final touches were dealt with handily. The home side took the lead twenty minutes after the start when Turkish international Halil Altıntop hit the spot with a perfect cross, followed by a soaring volley in by Kevin Kurányi. With a few changes to the normal 4-3-2-1 formation, BVB seemed stuck in the attack and the absence of Kuba, Zidan and Valdez from the starting eleven showed with few attacking threats.
After the break Jürgen Klopp adjusted his lineup bringing in Mohamed Zidan for Kevin-Prince Boateng, who was close to red-card on a few challenges and stirred the attack further adding Nelson Valdez and Christopher Kullmann later in the half. While Kurányi missed putting the match away at the hour, slowly BVB took control and once Kullman came on in the final fifteen minutes, they had the run of play. Finally with nine minutes remaining Egyptian international Mohamed Zidan scored from Nelson Valdez’s pass and the ten-thousand faithful traveling BVB supporters went wild. Hungry for the win, BVB continued to attack but a late opportunity by Zidan was denied and the match ended with a 1-1 draw.
