Roma target Dede as Chivu replacement

You’ve got to be kidding me. As was brought to my attention by Chris (sorry, buddy — the half eaten box of milk duds was tempting, but you know…), Luciano Spalletti and AS Roma have lined up our very own Dede as the replacement to a one Mr. Christian Chivu — who has apparently moved on to Inter Milan (I’ll believe it when I see him in the blue and black stripes).
At first I figured the rumor was just nonsense, but even Westline is reporting this now. Here’s the deal: Roma have offered Dortmund €6million for Dede, but Hans-Joachim Watzke is apparently looking for an offer more in the region of €10million. The catch: Dede wants to go to the Eternal City, which is the only reason Dortmund are considering making the deal.
“I can sign for four years in Rome and earn a multiple of that which I could earn in Dortmund,” Dede was quoted as saying. “I have been in Dortmund for so long that I believe I have earned this chance.”
Wow. Does he really want out that bad? He’s pretty much been an icon during his time here at the Westfalenstadion, so it would suck to see him playing in another jersey. Then again, if BVB can swing that €6million offer upwards to €10million, then that would be a pretty good deal for us considering the fact that Dede is approaching 30. Still, though, it’ll be tough to see Dede leave if this deal goes through.

Anywho, this is actually surprising, because from what I know of him, Dede is predominantly a left-sided player, correct? The worst kept secret in Rome right now is that they are going to be buying up Francesco Modesto for the LB spot, but this looks like maybe they reconsidered? Also the fact that the Roma LB is currently on the Italian NT, which is no small feat, especially in defense.
I don’t know. This is strange. Can he play on the right side at all that you know of? They just picked their 4th highly talented CB, so it’s obvious he won’t fit in there. Is he a good character guy? Someone who won’t mind coming off the pine?

His standard playing position is left back, so that does seem awkward that Roma are after him if they are about to buy Francesco Modesto. I guess you could put him elsewhere on the backline (and even in midfield if you were really desperate), but his most natural position is the left side of defense.
As far as character, he’s been great at Dortmund. A fan favorite. I’m not sure if he’d like coming off the bench or not. Does any player?

I honestly wouldn’t worry too much about it. Roma seems to only go for bargains, and they’ve pulled the same stunt with Toulouse over Jeremy Mathieu over the last two years and previously with Julien Faubert this summer. If they’re really 4m apart I doubt Roma will be keen on making up that difference. Luckily, they’ve been given quite a few bargains this summer.
The one thing I would worry about is Dede’s quote. As he may somewhat force a move to Rome if he really wants it. I’d bet the Roma management are hoping he pulls a Chivu.
