Dortmunders head to Frankfurt

By: Tucker | April 28th, 2009

As BVB enters the final month it is on-course for their best season since 2002. At present der Schwarzgelben have forty-nine points but if they are to win a spot in the Europa League they will need to make up five points in the remaining matches. Although they face lower table sides Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Bielefeld and Monchengladbach that might seem easier but with each fighting for safety and capable of upsets, BVB must expect to battle each weekend.

Jürgen Klopp is not predicting anything other than a continuation of hard working “honest” Football. Patrick Owomoyela said of the BVB’s effort:

“It´s so much fun and we enjoy it. And we don´t have to pinch ourselves to make sure it´s real, because we know how hard we worked for these wins.”

The next step in BVB’s advances is Frankfurt on Saturday which naturally will be a smoldering cauldron. Pushing their injury problems aside they can come up with big performances and their “twelfth-man” will not be quieted. Roughly 10,000 Dortmunders are making the short trip in support and will be needed in what is likely to be the weekends most “vocal” match.

So, what is it like to go to a big-time soccer match? I’ve never been to one. The closest thing we have to the stadium atmosphere is American Football but the fans are not even 1/4th as rowdy. I plan to make it out to Germany and Dortmund eventually but seeing as I’m in school i will need to work a good deal after it before I have the money.

Btw i’ve been to a few MLS games but that was many years ago. I live near New York City and am considering buying some season tickets to the Red Bulls. I’m back there for good in May (graduating from college), so it’s about time I get behind the local team. I really only discovered my love for soccer in the past few years. The players give their all and it is exciting at times, but the play is a far cry from anything in Europe save France. France may have talent but i’d rather watch the grass grow than see that league in action.

Oh and also, I was pulling for Subotic to play for the USA. He would have been an all-star on the USA international team. Maybe he didn’t want to fly transatlantic all the time?

Dkt – Well, one way to get a glimpse of the BVB home experience is by going to youtube, type in “bvb hamburg, bvb ist wieder da” and watch the several videos posted there: 80.000 fans singing after/at the end of the victory over hamburg last week. You really get a feeling for it. It’s just amazing. And yes, too bad that Subotic decided to play for Serbia. Maybe it was his father who persuaded him.

Tucker, I agree that Dortmund needs to win this one if they still want to have a chance for a European spot. Hamburg plays against Hertha, so at least one of the top 5 clubs will drop points and BVB might get closer this weekend, after all -again, only IF they capture the three away points at Eintracht. I am sure the atmosphere will be fantastic then against Karlsruhe, where BVB could get its all-time club record of seven consecutive wins — and I will be in the stadium for this one! Be that as it may, I also think that there can be little question that the team is in its best shape since the major financial crisis, maybe even since the 2002 championship.

Lars, that’s a good idea regarding Youtube, I will see what I can find of the fan experience but I recommend strongly for you to register with Bundesliga web-site (which is free) and if you want to be more involved the BVB Club is worthwhile. I only wish some of the readers were relatively local and you could experience a match-day with my friends.

I’m not sure how to express a “big-time” match because I was raised in the sport, still play but get to all levels of play and they all mean a lot to me. Naturally you’d find BVB game-day incredible so hopefully you can get to one soon.

Regarding Neven Subotić, I am not positive of it but I’m glad to see him represent his birth-place although it is a unique situation. I wish that was enforced as a rule but that is for other people to decide.

Trying to submit my preview now – can’t seem to log in so will need to try later tonight.

BVB are on a mission. We need the table to give us a little help now.
