By: Tucker | January 28th, 2009
In a rematch of last years round of sixteen, Werder defeated Die Schwarzgelben 2-1 in front of 74,000 fans at the Westfalenstadion. For the balance of the match, Werder were able to create more scoring chances and after having problems finishing before the break, scored twice in the final forty-five minutes. Kevin-Prince Boateng made his debut for BVB and with Kuba out, Jürgen Klopp paired Alexander Frei and Mohamed Zidan up-front. Ten minutes after the start Florian Kringe set the ground work for the first goal and his challenge set allowed Mohamed Zidan to play through to Alexander Frei resulting in the first goal. The match was full of fireworks after, with BVB missing chances when Zidan hit the post later and Frei unable to convert on Boateng’s pass before the hour. However their was no stopping Werder and Hugo Almeida found the equalizer at the sixty-second minute and Claudio Pizarro added the winner with ten minutes remaining as he got on the end of a rebound from Diego’s free-kick. BVB poured forward but couldn’t level and now must turn to Saturday against Leverkusen.
