BVB defeats Köln in great defensive battle
By: Tucker | October 29th, 2008
BVB overcame an near-perfect defensive plan by Köln to win 1-0 in a packed RheinEnergieStadion. While BVB controlled possession of the ball, Christoph Daum’s 4-2-3-1 drained the life from the attack and limited scoring chances. After ten matches Köln are mid-table and playing at a level that makes it easy to forget that they were in the second division last year. Of course, that could be said for Hoffenheim as well and maybe it’s about time that upper-tier clubs take notice of their tactical approach.
The out-matched Köln threw a blanket on the BVB attack with Tinga and Tamás Hajnal swarmed by Petit and Kevin Pezzoni. Polish international Jakub Błaszczykowski, who yes wouldn’t be left out regardless of having surgery this week on his broken nose was marked tight by Pierre Wome but managed to stir-up trouble as he came close with a header just before the break. However with twenty-five minutes left, BVB finally broke down their defense as Tinga’s pass to Tamás Hajnal was linked to Florian Kringe for a efficient finish and the 1-0 lead. FC Köln was unable to launch an effective attack and BVB goes home with the victory and gets ready to face Bochum Sunday evening.

Cologne would be looking far more impressive if they had managed to hold on to Patrick Helmes, who joined Leverkusen on a free transfer. At least there’s still a relatively comfortable gap between Cologne and the relegation places.
