Bundesliga Preview: Wolfsburg vs Dortmund

By: Clarissa | April 6th, 2012

Now, the draw against Stuttgart last weekend means that Bayern are closing in on our lead. It’s just three points seperating us and the Bavarians, plus they have a better goal- difference.

That means that now we cannot allow ourselfs any slip- ups anymore, especially with the difficult games against Schalke and Munich still to come. However, first we have to go up against a resurgent Wolfsburg. The Wolves have been playing a strong second half of the season, and are now in contention for an Europaleague place. Particularly at home Wolfsburg have shown some very strong performances recently. Meanwhile our guys need to get the 4 goals conceded against Stuttgart out of their system.

Coming to the players, Dortmund will be able to use pretty much the full contingent. The interesting question is if Gündogan, who has finally been playing very well in the last few weeks, will start, or whether we’ll see Lars Bender.
Wolfsburg might be missing Patrick Helmes, who is currently on a goal- scoring streak. This could be an advantage for us, if he really has to miss the game. Coming to Götze, he is back in training, and will perhaps get a few minutes with the second team. Should be soon though, when he can return to the senior side.

    Hey Clarissa,

So now, us Bayern fans find ourselves hunting down you lot in two different competitions..:) I still think Dortmund will win the league by the way. Hey, I thought it was Sven who played for you guys- Lars plays for Leverkusen, right? What do you think? Will you guys win a double?

Watching the match now, and I’m much happier. Last week, we got a lead, yet kept playing foolish long-balls (as if we had to tack on another goal) and losing possession. This week, we’ve gotten a lead and then strung together short passes to keep possession and keep control of the game. If we keep this up, I think we’ll get the result.

In response to Samrin, my gut tells me we’ll split the two trophies. The teams are just too closely matched for one to take both titles. I think that what, if anything, Dortmund can get out of Gotze will be crucial. The direction of the team’s becomes much weaker without him. In any case, good luck in Europe! I hope you represent the Bundesliga well.

@Clarissa- seeing the two of the Bender brothers together, I always get confused! I guess Sven is shorter and muscular- Lars is taller and leaner.

@vermaelen5- A split would mean our teams open the next season in the supercup. Actually, in any case, that will happen because if one wins the double, the one will finish second in both cases. As for Europe, I have my fingers crossed- I am hoping for a win this year but not expecting it.

Samrin, I must say a win for you in Europe would be fantastic, but don’t forget that you’ve done quite a bit for yourselves and the Bundesliga already. I certainly don’t see an Italian team anywhere in Europe at this point, and the pair of German clubs that made the Europa quarters will do nothing but help our coefficient.
