Loan deals, new deals, and no deals

By: Steven | July 5th, 2007

sahin2As I stated at the bottom of one of my last posts, Dortmund would consider loaning out Nuri Sahin only “if everything fits exactly”. Well, apparently “everything fits exactly” in Rotterdam, as Sahin will be joining up with axed-last-year BVB coach Bert van Marwijk on a one-year loan deal. I like this move a lot. van Marwjk is really big on Sahin, and Sahin should have plenty of time to play and gain experience in the Eredivisie. Good move, BVB.

In other news, Thomas Doll has told Lars Ricken that there is no place for him in his squad. Ricken won’t be traveling with the team to their Switzerland training camp, but will instead “be with Theo”, according to Doll. By this, Doll meant that Ricken will be training with the amateurs. Ouch. Thanks for this, Lars, but maybe it’s time for you to pack your things.

Also, Ebi Smolarek has just rejected a contract extension. Apparently this doesn’t worry Doll, who has said that he has no problem waiting until the winter break to sit down and talk with the players about extensions. Hopefully he’s a good negotiator!

Ah, that Ricken goal, if he’s clever he will manage to live from this one long past his active football career. Many did so before him. Anyway, too bad that he could never celebrate a real career breakthrough. But I think there are still some Bundesliga and second Bundesliga teams who could use him in their starting formation.

Anyway, I have to say that I’m actually impressed by Dortmund so far. Obviously didn’t have the best of seasons and tbh I thought that they won’t be a serious contender for anything in the new season either. But their transfers look very good and promising. At least on paper. The UEFA-Cup race looks set to be wide open.

I wasn’t expecting much, but I’m optimistic about this team. I definitely think we can qualify for the UEFA Cup. I can’t wait for the season to start.
