You make lots of good points, Chris. And yeah, he is a "mammoth" compared to other soccer player, but not necessarily to football players.

You're also right about the limited success of Americans in the Bundesliga, but I really think Gooch has the possibility of being a success.

I wish Dortmund was still the powerhouse that they were in the 90's, but the fact is they are not. Poor management decisions have put them in a horrible, horrible hole, and they just have to work with what they have as of now unfortunately.

I've always found it funny how the size of footballers is compared to other sports. I'm a little over 6'3 and about 195, but I don't think anyone would ever call me 'mammoth' or close to it. In fact, I feel weird when people say I'm tall-I don't think I am. If I played the other football I'd be a wide receiver and the same with Onyewu. We wouldn't exactly compare to the 350lb defensive tackles. Not criticism, you're right about his size compared to other soccer players, just an observation that I've noticed quite a few times.

As for his success in Dortmund, Americans in the Bundesliga don't exactly have a glittering track record(a few names aside). Out of any American he prolly has the best chance right now and the league could suit him well. But Dortmund is cash-strapped and he's a gamble. I think they need players of a higher class and ones who have succeeded on a higher level than the Belgian stage. I know they've struggled lately but my vision of Dortmund is still the powerhouse from the mid-late 90's and I'd like to see them return to prominence.

I had the exact same thought this morning. He'd bring a really interesting dimension to the field and get a chance to shine on a bigger stage. Plus, experience with big crowds. Big, vocal crowds.

I'd love to see him in the Bundesliga, and you're right, he hasn't seemed happy at Standard. Go get him!
