Matchday 4: Dortmund leave it late

By: Steven | September 1st, 2007

Sorry for going MIA there for a week.

Anyway, Dortmund had another match today. The opponent was lowly Hansa Rostock, who are bringing up the rear in the Bundesliga. Should be a huge win, right? Wrong. Rostock played very well at home and, in all honesty, were unlucky not to at least get a point out of this. But Giovanni Federico scored in the 76th minute and it held up to give us our second win in a row.

Ziegler was again in goal for Dortmund, with Dede, Wörns, Brzenska, and Degen in the back. Kringe, Tinga, Kuba, and Federico were the midfielders; Klimowicz and Valdez were paired up top.

Go back and read that lineup again. Do you see why it lead to another BVB win? It is because Wörns and Kovac weren’t the central pair in defense. Honestly, these two suck together and should never be playing on the field at the same time ever again.

Anyway, Federico assumed Mladen Petric’s usual role at the top of the diamond in midfield (or the “hanging striker” role) and did quite well. And by well, I mean he scored the winner.

Whatever. I can’t complain too much. It’s another win for Dortmund and the climb up the table continues.

Too bad for Rostock, vastly improved over their previous performances, a draw or a victory would have been ok for them as well. But I’m happy to see that Dortmund is slowly making its way into the upper regions of the league table.

I just read some positive financial news regarding Borussia Dortmund. It seems that last year has been a record year culminating in a €10.3m profit and their debt has been reduced to just €14.3m (excluding a separate €103m for the stadium, but that’s something every club that renovated or built a new stadium has to deal with). Revenue was around €90m (quite impressive for a club that doesn’t play internationally).

I only found an official announcement, which is heavy on numbers:
