Today marks the beginning the great race for the Pokal Cup, well for Dortmund at least. Just to sum up the actions, and give you my reactions to yesterday’s official opening of the first round. First off you have to look at Wolfsburg, as did they put on a show. Granted they ought to have, as they played SV Wehen Wiesbaden, a team who just moved from the 2. Bundesliga to the 3rd. I believe Wolfsburg’s performance was by far the most impressive of the Bundesliga 1 teams, as they proved that they are prepared to defend their title. But my favorite was Mainz 05 vs VfB Lübeck. Lübeck came out and matched the Bundesliga’s team, and then in extra time they took advantage of their opportunities. Congratulations to VfB Lübeck, a regional team sneaking in a win against a Bundesliga 1 team.

Now onto the good stuff, Borussia Dortmund 09 vs SpVgg Weiden.

Hopefully we avoid the fate of Mainz 05, and take it too Weiden. What we should see is a solid attack, or at the least, an attempt. Unfortunately the team captian, Sebastian Kehl, will be sitting this one out, but the Schwarzgelben should be alright with out him. Hopefully we can see some production from Valdez and Zidan, but ultimately what we should be hoping for is a strong performance from our newly aquired strikers. Obviously we are all hoping that Lucas Barrios (#18) will prove to the world that his accomplishments in the Chilean League were no hoax, and his ability to score helps BVB claim victory. Another player, who should have a chance to shine in Dortmund is former Energie Cottbus player, Dimitar Rangelov. Rangelov made 43 appearances for Cottbus and scored a total of 18 goals and 3 assists. Hopefully he can produce better results with Dortmund, and he should, now that his supporting cast is improved.

The match begins at 15:30 (+1 GMT) and let’s hope for the best.

Thanks to the over-spenders in Munich’s win over Wolfsburg last night, Borussia Dortmund is virtually guaranteed a spot in next year’s UEFA Cup. Should we fail to win the Cup in Berlin, we’ll be given a spot anyway since Bayern will be finishing in a Champions League spot. But that kind of thinking is unacceptable. We know our opponent and we’re going to win.

Now if our league play wanted to pick up a little bit, that would be great…

Tinga was the first to find the back of the net, as he pounced on a loose ball in the box in the 13th minute. In the 71st minute, Diego Klimowicz scored in similar fashion to double the lead. Mladen Petric then added an emphatic third some 15 minutes later to seal BVB’s spot in Berlin.

Dortmund’s opponent for the April 19th clash at the Olympistadion is not yet known, but it will be either Bayern Munich or VfL Wolfsburg. The two teams will meet tomorrow to determine who gets to play opposite Borussia in one month’s time.

Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt in the second round of the DFB Cup. Conveniently enough, the match will be played within the home comforts of the Westfalenstadion.

The match marks just the third meeting between the two sides in the Pokal, with Eintracht winning the previous two meetings in 1968/69 and 1978/79. The 68/69 result was a lopsided one as Dortmund were on the losing end of a 6-1 scoreline. The 78/79 result wasn’t quite as bad, but Frankfurt still won out 3-1.

As far as recent league form between the two sides goes, a tie (1-1) and a win for BVB (2-0) were the results from last season.

Borussia Dortmund eased past 1. FC Magdeburg in the first round of the DFB Cup on Saturday with a 4-1 win. Goalscorers for BVB were Ebi Smolarek, Diego Klimowicz, and Mladen Petric.

Dortmund lined up in a 4-4-2/quasi-4-4-3 with Ziegler in goal; Dede, Kovac, Wörns, and Degen in the back; Tinga, Kehl, Kuba, and Petric in the middle (Petric was playing very high, though); and Klimowicz and Smolarek up top.

Ebi got us off to a flying start in just the fourth minute, when he scored a typical Ebi Smolarek goal. That, of course, means he got on the end of a ball that bounced around in the box and just poked it past Beer to make it 1-0. His goals aren’t usually pretty, but you’ve gotta love the effort and determination the guy has.

Klimowicz then added the second Dortmund goal in the 30th by means of a long, looping header that went over Beer’s head and into the back of the net. It was absolutely awful defending by Magdeburg, but a nice finish by Klimowicz nonetheless.

Eric Agyemang then scored for Magdeburg before halftime to make it 2-1.

On the other side of the break, Sebastian Kehl sent in a great cross for Petric, who did very well to head past Beer to make it 3-1 to BVB.

Dortmund finished the goalscoring in the 90th minute, when Tinga and Klimowicz worked a lovely one-two that sprung the Argentine free in the box to slot the ball past the keeper. A great goal to finish off the game.

This is a very pleasing result. We fielded our best squad and got the result we were looking for. Now I’m just imagining how we’ll look once Frei fully recovers. We could be a team to look out for this year…

Tomorrow marks the first competitive game of the season for Borussia Dortmund, as they start their DFB Cup campaign against 1. FC Magdeburg. I will preface this by saying that I will have no way of watching the match or listening to it (my German is about as good as my Swahili — that is, not good at all), so I’ll be relaying others’ reports to you later this weekend. Deal with it.

Everyone should be able to go for the match, with the exception of Roman Weidenfeller (who will be replaced by Marc Ziegler in goal due to a suspension), Alex Frei, and Giovanni Federico (both are out with injuries). The projected lineup from the club’s official website is as follows:

Ziegler; Degen, Wörns, Kovac, Dede; Kehl, Kuba, Tinga/Buckley, Petric; Smolarek, Klimowicz

That’s not a bad lineup. It’ll be interesting to see who gets the nod between Tinga and Buckley, though. Buckley has been playing well as of late, but Tinga has been pretty reliable. Either way I think we should be fine.

Unfortunately, though, I will be out of town until Sunday. So I’ll be back then with post match thoughts. Let’s not screw this one up…
